Extension of existing wall

Extension of existing wall

Extension of existing wall

(OP)
I have existing wall 2x6 x 7.5’.  The stud is at 16” o.c.  Can I add about 1.5’ on top of this wall?  Since the wall studs are not continuing.  I plan to use ½” plywood on both sides.  Do you think this is Ok for the wall to take about 20 psf wind load?

RE: Extension of existing wall

You are going to create a pivot point.  Why are you going to extend it?  raising the roof/ceiling?

RE: Extension of existing wall

That is why he is using plywood both sides.  Ply will serve as flange to carry bending, thus no pivot.  With adequate connectors, should work.

Yes, raise the floor/ceiling form 7.5' to 9'

RE: Extension of existing wall

You would need to ensure that there are enough fasteners for longitudinal shear between the ply and the studs, and enough fasteneres between the top and bottom studs to transfer shear.

I would think it would be cheaper to place full height studs between the existing ones than plywood both sides. For that matter it would not be that expensive to replace the stud wall.
