Design of Aluminum Base Plate

Design of Aluminum Base Plate

(OP)
Hi all,

I am looking for a good reference on the design of aluminum base plates.  The 2005 Aluminum Design Manual does not cover the topic.  I am working on a small aluminum walkway between two structures and have everything completed except for the column base plates.  I was considering following the same procedure that is shown in AISC and just using the modified yields for aluminum.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have designed aluminum baseplates and I do exactly what you mention.  I follow the exact same procedure as for steel, but use the properties of the aluminum.
Note that if your column will be welded to the baseplate the yield stress is reduced considerably.  Also be sure to provide a korolath break and a galvanized plate between the aluminum plate and the grout as well as stainless or galvanized anchor rods.

Good points!  Thanks for taking the time to write.
