SUB-ASSEMBLY SHUFFLE

SUB-ASSEMBLY SHUFFLE

SUB-ASSEMBLY SHUFFLE

(OP)
Read this  v e r y   s l o w l y ...

I had an assembly containing 2 sub-assemblies. One of thos sub-assemblies contained a sub-sub-assembly. I dragged the sub-sub-assembly out of the sub-assembly. Now I have an assembly containing 3 sub-assemblies.

But in order to drag the sub-sub-assembly out of the sub-assembly - I had to insert a random part in my assembly (at the bottom of the "tree")... so I could drag the sub-sub-assembly out, & drop it below that random part. Then I deleted the random part.

Holding the ALT key down to re-arrange components in an assembly don't woork so good when all the components are sub-assemblies.

Anybody have a better way to do what I did?

RE: SUB-ASSEMBLY SHUFFLE

Could you not have had the main assembly open as well as the sub-assembly containing the sub-sub-assembly and then dragged the sub-sub-assembly into the main assembly?

Would that have worked... or would it copy the sub-assembly?
And then I would have to re-mate everything... right?

RE: SUB-ASSEMBLY SHUFFLE

I was thinking that, when you dragged the sub-sub-assembly out, it would have made another copy. I guess that'll teach me to assume.
My way would have required you to create new mates...

RE: SUB-ASSEMBLY SHUFFLE

I read your post several times. I don't understand why you moved around the subassy's.
Was it just to reorder them in the main assy?
The easiest way would be to undo some of the mates to reorder. A part or subassy can not be reordered before a part or subassy it is mated to.

Try "Tools/"Reorganize Components"....then you can select the sub assembly to move, then select the destination assy.

FAQ376

RE: SUB-ASSEMBLY SHUFFLE

Another star for you Gildashard.  I have run into this situation in the past.  Fortunately I wasn't working with an assembly containing only subassys.  So I didn't have to create a dummy part.

RE: SUB-ASSEMBLY SHUFFLE

I tried this without the tool I recommended earlier and it works for me, unless I'm misunderstanding. I created a assy containg two sub-assemblies, the two sub-assys contained additional sub-assys. I then dragged the sub-sub-assy into the top level. I just dragged it over the top level sub-assy which gives you the "double arrow" icon and it moved it into the top level fine. Did I miss something?

RE: SUB-ASSEMBLY SHUFFLE

The problem sometimes arises when dropping a component or sub-assy below a sub-assy. The Alt button doesn't always switch the drop from "Add to" to "Add below".

Well... shave my head & call me Curly... it worked!
I never dragged it to the top of my feature tree the first time thru.
