Galling resistance of AL6XN vs C276

Galling resistance of AL6XN vs C276

(OP)
Our current design uses a C276 nut on a AL6XN threaded rod in a seawater environment. I am looking at replacing the C276 nut with a AL6XN one but am concerned about galling. Does anyone have experience with AL6XN fasteners or know where to find more information?

RE: Galling resistance of AL6XN vs C276

Are the treads rolled?  If so you shouldn't have trouble.  Cut threads would be another story.
Why are you looking to change?

They are cut threads. The c276 are over twice as expensive.

RE: Galling resistance of AL6XN vs C276

They make a lot of AL6XN fasteners so galling shouldn't be a tremendous problem.  Normally a self-mated couple will cause a little more problem than a dissembler couple. I don't think you should have any more trouble than what you were seeing with your present combination. If you do have nay problem you might want to try AL6XN Plus for the nut.

I would try to get a hold of Allegheny Ludlum , the daddy of AL6XN, and see if they have some data on galling.

You can't actually buy AL-6XNplus, unless you buy a heat lot.

I have always used C276 nuts since I could by them out of stock and not order specials.  Look into having your bolt threads made by rolling.  There are a lot of small roll houses around that would make a small run.  I think that you will like the results.

Gave you a star for that one, Ed.

Think you sat in on my NACE paper last month in Nashville.  Alloy 31 in phos acid.  Thanks for the positive feedback.
