Obsolete tool storage

Obsolete tool storage

(OP)
I am sorting obsolete tools and need to store them; the tools may be used again for the spares market so they have to be kept in good working order. Apart from spraying the tools with mould protection and draining any water in the cooling channels is there anything else I should do.

RE: Obsolete tool storage

Mark them very clearly to show that they _are_ tools and not just lumps of metal to be sold for scrap.

Maintain a backed up index of where they are stored, and make sure that several people know where the index is and how to use it, so you will be able to find the tools when you need them, and so will your successor.

RE: Obsolete tool storage

Also mark them as to who owns them and what part they make and what product it is used in.

RE: Obsolete tool storage

Just a wild shot, but would it be worth it to include how many castings have already been made from the tool and/or what materials were shot into it, or is that obvious from the amount of visible wear?

RE: Obsolete tool storage

Also you do not want to leave them on a concrete floor. Maybe set them on some skids, 4 x 4's or even sheets of plywood.

RE: Obsolete tool storage

Along with tools should go the work instructions, etc.  Callouts for the tools should be marked with a unique identifier that is also marked on the tool itself to eliminate confusion as to which tool is what.

RE: Obsolete tool storage

It would probably also help to attach a set of mouldings in a plastic bag from when the tool was last run.

RE: Obsolete tool storage

I always send them back to the customer who owns them.

Problem moved!
