Use of D1558 Penetrometer

Use of D1558 Penetrometer

(OP)
I inherited the penetrometer for use in D1558. Had never seen one before or ever used one - obviously. Was wondering if anybody uses/has used this in their own work?  If so, were you able to have any correlations of pentration with undrained shear strength?  It seems to me that besides developing the relationship of penetration with moisture, the sample, too, could have/could be tested in UU conditions to get a strength relationship too.  Does anyone have any background on the test, its use, etc.?
Thanks.
