I am trying to figure out what the stress distribution looks like within the "meat" of a hex nut.  I want to know how griding off the corner of a nut effects the overall strength of the nut.  These nuts are large heavy hux nuts that are 1-1/8" size that are 1-7/64" thick and 1-13/16 across the flats.  We want to grind off one edge at about a 45 degree angle, taking off a 1/2 inch of material (without touching the threaded area, on the side that does not meet up with the flange surface).  If anyone has any information or links it would be greatly appreciated!

RE: Stress Distribution in Nuts

Grinding the corners off a hex nut will have no effect on stress distribution as long as you don't reduce the thickness below the "across flats" dimension.  In effect, you will have created a cylindrical nut, similar to a tapped hole in a boss.
