looking for an older book or new equivelent

(OP)
I am looking to get my hands on a copy of the ITT Grinnell Piping Design and Engineering handbook 1973.

Any ideas on where to look?  or Can someone suggest an alternate book.

Thanks

John

Hi John,

The old Grinnell Book had a lot of good “stuff” in it.  If you could be more explicit regarding what information you are looking for perhaps we could be more specific in the books we recommend.

One thing that the old Grinnell book had was a section on support/hanger design and you can get a free copy of that at:

http://www.anvilintl.com/db/datasheets/Pipe_Hanger_Design-05.pdf

The old Grinnell book had a lot off general piping data and another book that had that was the old NAVCO Datalog.  The wonderful and greatly missed old Navco Piping Datalog has somehow "popped-up" again.  More copies of that have show up at the new NAVCO owner and the contact information for that can be found at:

http://www.basicpsa.com/navco_piping_datalog.htm

I just pulled mine off the shelf and I see that is is Edition number 11, dated 1984 and the advertised price then was $40.00. The same edition is being offered at $50.00 per copy with an additional $6.00 shipping cost. As is the case of any older reference, the engineer MUST verify the data from the Datalog before using it. Sometimes the applicable Codes may have made some changes in such things as allowable stresses through the years.

Another book that we all thought was out of print is the old Tube Turns book but we find that there are still a few copies of that to be had:

The Tube Turns book "Design of Piping Systems" (it includes the famous "Markl Papers") is available again for the price of $35.00. I used a credit card for payment ($35.00) including shipping (502-774-6218).

A very good “freebee” government guide written by George Antaki can be downloaded from:

http://engstandards.lanl.gov/engrman/6mech/pdfs/D20-AppA-ASME_B31.3-r1a.pdf

Another government (Army) publication with good general data can be downloaded from:

http://www.usace.army.mil/inet/usace-docs/eng-manuals/em1110-1-4008/toc.htm

Another good “freebee” for seismic design of piping systems (also written by George Antaki) can be downloaded here:

http://www.americanlifelinesalliance.org/pdf/Seismic_Design_and_Retrofit_of_Piping_Systems.pdf

I hope this helps and you can find the references you need.

Regards, John

RE: looking for an older book or new equivelent

Hello all,

I have been asked which of the Markl papers are included in Tube Turns book "Design of Piping Systems" mentioned above.
There are ten papers/articles (by various authors) included in the back of the book:

Fatigue Tests of Welding Elbows vs. Mitre Bends - A.R.C. Markl, 1947

Fatigue Tests of Flanged Assemblies - A.R.C. Markl and H.H. George, 1949

Fatigue Tests of Piping Components - A.R.C. Markl, 1951

Piping Flexibility Analysis - A.R.C. Markl, 1953

Effects of Internal Pressure on Flexibility - E.C. Rodabaugh and H.H. George, 1956

Balanced Quality as a means of Attaining Maximum Economic Safety For Critical Piping - A.R.C. Markl, 1957

Fabricated Pressure Piping as Related to Nuclear Applications - J.J.Murphy, C.R. Soderberg, H.S. Blumberg, and D.B. Rossheim, 1957

On the Design of Bellows Elements - A.R.C. Markl, 1964

Why Branch Connections Fail - A.R.C. Markl, E.C. Rodabaugh and H.H. George, 1955

Tests of Pups Support "Bridging Effect" - E.C. Rodabaugh and H.H. George, 1959

The first half of the book includes typical properties of pipes, Pressure - Stress Ratios, Flow of Fluids, Line Expansion and Flexibility, and Layout Dimensions of Fittings and Flanges. This is an old book and some of the data is dated but any piping engineer will benefit from reading it cover to cover.

Regards, John,

RE: looking for an older book or new equivelent

Hello again all,

I should have mentioned that there are two excellent books currently available (in print and current in their revisions) that address the piping engineering science:

Process Piping: The Complete Guide to ASME B31.3, Second Edition, by Dr. Charles Becht IV,

http://catalog.asme.org/books/PrintBook/Process_Piping_Complete_Guide.cfm

Dr. Becht's book has MUCH piping data and it addresses many other topics on "pipe stress analysis" (the pipe stress analysis check list is worth the price of the book).

CASTI Guidebook to ASME B31.3 Process Piping (Fourth edition), ISBN: 0071364714, by Glynn E. Woods, and Roy B. Baguley
http://www.casti.ca/ (click on books and ebooks)

and for a preview download:

Regards, John
