Choice of 2205 versus CuNi9010 and CuNi7030 in chlorine environment

Choice of 2205 versus CuNi9010 and CuNi7030 in chlorine environment

Choice of 2205 versus CuNi9010 and CuNi7030 in chlorine environment

(OP)
We want to design coolers (of a compressor)made of duplex 2205 which have to compete against coolers made in CuNi tubes and brass endplates.
I'd like to know more about the corrosion properties of these materials.
Specification of the coolwater: maximal temperature:45°C, pH>6.8.
Has 2205 better corrosion properties than CuNi?
How much chloride content can 2205 sustain?
How much chloride content can CuNi7030 and CuNi9010 sustain?

RE: Choice of 2205 versus CuNi9010 and CuNi7030 in chlorine environment

70/30 is a seawater service alloy, it has much better corrosion resistance than the other two grades.  and costs  a lot more.

The biggest difference between 2205 and 90/10 is not in corrosion resistance, but physical and mechanical properties.
The 2205 is stiffer (higher modulus) so you can use less support.
The 2205 is stronger so you can use thinner tubes.
The 2205 is more erosion resistant so you should use higher flow velocities.  Higher flows will improve heat transfer and keep the tubes cleaner (which also improves heat transfer).
Overall heat transfer will be a wash, or slightly favor 2205 after you thin the walls and increase flow.

It is common to see 2205 used in 5,000ppm Cl environments.  You can go higher if conditions are right.
