Stuff just stops working

Stuff just stops working

Stuff just stops working

(OP)
I can't recreate this problem, it just seems to happen randomly...
After working for a while in SW, I'll suddenly lose the ability to save or use shortcut keys. My SpacePilot will cease to work and my standard views will disappear. It's not locking up; I can still zoom in/out and pan with my mouse.
Any thoughts?

RE: Stuff just stops working

What is happening in the Task Manager when this happens? (RAM, VM usage, CPU %, etc)

cheers

Good question, CBL, but I think nothing. I'm not seeing any slowdowns or obvious system lags. However, the next time it happens, I'll check it out.

RE: Stuff just stops working

Does this happen after a pause in activity within SW?  Or is it while you're working in SW?

I'll be working and then I'll notice that my SpacePilot buttons aren't working. I can still zoom/pan/spin with it. Shortcut keys on my keyboard stop working as well.

RE: Stuff just stops working

That sounds like it could be a mouse or input device driver issue.  Was your Space Pilot or mouse installed recently?  Or, was the driver for either of those devices updated recently?

RE: Stuff just stops working

I think it's related to a faulty USB connection.  Next time it stops working, try unplugging the device and plugging it back in.

RE: Stuff just stops working

I don't know if this is related to your issue, but I'm having issues with SP2.2 and its recognition of shortcuts.  Here's the response from my VAR:

Quote:

Hey Matthew,
SolidWorks knows about this issue already, however it was apparently fixed in SP3. A coworker here had a similar issue and SP3 did not fix the issue until he did a full uninstall/reinstall. So I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling as per these instructions:

To Uninstall/Reinstall Solidworks

•Backup any existing files
•Log-in as a local administrator
•Disable your Antivirus Software and Antispyware Tools
•Go to Add / Remove Programs, and remove all SolidWorks programs
•Open windows explorer, and delete any remaining SolidWorks Directories (C:/Program Files/SolidWorks)**
•Go to Start / Run and type out "regedit"
•Delete the "solidworks" folder underneath of HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/SolidWorks and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SolidWorks***
•Update any video card drivers that may be needed.
•Restart your computer
•Log-in as a local administrator
•Disable your Antivirus Software and Antispyware Tools
•Reinstall SolidWorks*

*If you previously had Toolbox, be sure to use the same solidworks common data folder for the new install
**In 64 bit windows, verify both c:/program files and c:/program files (x86)
***In 64 bit windows, remove any solidworks keys under the hkey_local_machine/software/wow6432node

Here is the SPR # (Software Performance Report) issued by SolidWorks for your reference: SPR 338180
You can track this SPR by doing these steps:
1.) Go to www.solidworks.com
2.) Pick Login located top center of the screen
3.) Pick on subscription service customers
4.) Type out your 16 digit serial number and hit login OR enter your login and password.
5.) Pick Check SPR's under My Support
6.) Hit the Query button
7.) Type out the SPR# you were given and hit the GO button.

Let me know if a reinstall fixes the issue.
Thanks.

RE: Stuff just stops working

This may not be related to your issue but I have noticed my keyboard shortcuts for macro's go dead at times. I have to go to the Tools/Customize/Keyboard tab and then I select the Shortcut's column header. This seems to wake things up then my shortcuts for macro's work again.

Also, when doing a complete Uninstall / Re-install, is it OK to use your copy settings wizard prior to the uninstall? or does this bring back possible corruption into the new install?

Ok, I deleted the 1,383 objects from my temp folder...

If it is a bad USB connection, why would it affect my keyboard shortcuts?

I'm going to pay close attention today in case it happens again. I'll also be sure to get the stats from the task manager.

Thanks all!
