PWHT acc. to B31.3

PWHT acc. to B31.3

(OP)
Hi,
I've some questions relating to PWHT:
1- On the ASME B31.3 section 331.1.3.a the through weld thickness shall be computed using some formulas. What's the difference between the sketch 1 & 2 ?
2- if the pipe wall thickness is great than the minimum material thickness requiring heat treatment (mwt), is PWHT mandatory or shall we compute the through weld thickness and see whether is greater than or not to the twice mwt?

RE: PWHT acc. to B31.3

LBouzid;
What is sketch 1 and 2 you are referring too? I just reviewed the applicable subparagraph 331.1.3 Governing Thickness, in the 2002 Edition of ASME B31.3, on page 71 and the formulas refer you back to Figure 328.5.4 D. It is self explanatory to me regarding the use of the formulas and their reference in this Figure.
