Are overlapping geometries bad?

Are overlapping geometries bad?

Are overlapping geometries bad?

(OP)
Hi,

In WB.  My model containts partially overlapping parts.  Sometimes the overlapping (shared) volumes are substantial.  Does this cause problems with the meshing or other aspects of the simulation?

RE: Are overlapping geometries bad?

Hi,
a straightforward answer is not possible. Generally meshing is not a problem as long as the meshes in the two overlapping volumes are done "independently". There are cases where overlapping is unphysical, other cases where it is necessary (shrink-fit)...
By using all the contact adjustment commands, normally you can model your geometry "as nominal" without gaps or overlappings.
