Generator belly tank

Generator belly tank

Generator belly tank

(OP)
How far does a 400 kW with a 300 gallon belly tank of No 2. diesel generator have to be from a building?

Looking in NFPA and it's rather convoluted.

THANKS

RE: Generator belly tank

Try NFPA 30, it will show how far from property lines and buildings.

Of the top of my head, over 276 gallons is 15 feet off of a property line and 5 feet from a building on the same property.

Take the "V" out of HVAC and you are left with a HAC(k) job.

RE: Generator belly tank

You should stay away from alleys, make sure that your prevailing winds will not carry generator fumes to nearby buildings outdoor air intakes.
It happened before, the fumes from the gen set entered the adjacent building OA intakes in the penthouse (with gen set on ground) and triggered the AHU smoke detetctors, resulting into a false alarm and building evacuation.
IBC addresses that since it IS the code for most buildings, NFPA being only a guideline in some jurisdictions.

RE: Generator belly tank

5 feet from the property line and 5 feet from the building. See NFPA 30, Tables 4.3.2.1.1 (a) & (b). These separation distances assume the building is protected by a fire department.

Also, make sure your tank is constructed as meeting UL 142 and is designed as either a closed top diked, closed top diked or secondary containment tank. A method of secondary containment is required by International Fire Code chapter 34.

And the tank requires a construction permit under the 2003 or 2006 IFC so you will need to submit plans to the fire department.
