Does anyone know of a reference which describes the amount of magnetic force that can be obtained from a wire related to the gauge of wire and amount of current/voltage passing through it?

Amp-Turns doesn't seem to have a voltage or wire size component.  Obviously there is a relationship between wire size and the maximum Amps you can send through the wire for any appreciable amount of time.

The strength of a DC magnet is most dependent on the resistance of one turn of average length. As you double the number of turns, you double the resistance.
This cuts the current in half. Half the current through twice the number of turns equals the same number of amp turns.
This relationship is well to keep in mind when doing "cut and try" calculations for magnet coils.
Of course, on AC twice the number of turns means 4 times the inductance and the calculations get a little more interesting.
