Motor was overhauled in workshop recently. Overhaul process included coat of paint over windings.  Once assembled and testing, motor created bang sound, and puff of air. At first workman thought he blew the capacitor, which was quickly eliminated because it was a split phase motor. No capacitor. Experienced repairer asked if he had painted windings, and suggested it was the effect the gasses had off the paint, that caused the bang and air.  Motor continued to run ok, and was sent out.
Any offer an explanation as to why this occurs? Interested.

If the motor has a centrifugal switch I guess in theory any arc generated across the contacts could ingnite solvent fumes.

Yeehaa, good thinking star-delta.  Makes sense doesnt it.  I should of thought of that.  SOme time its the easy things.  Actually most times it the easy things!
