ASME B31.1 Pipe Joint Combined WPS Question

ASME B31.1 Pipe Joint Combined WPS Question

ASME B31.1 Pipe Joint Combined WPS Question

(OP)
Wasn't sure whether to post this here or on the ASME site, but, since it is a weld question here goes:

This relates to a B31.1 pipe joint for shop fabricated manifolds:
We have a qualified WPS for SMAW on A106 pipe(P-1)with removable backing ring. Now would like to do the root passes with GTAW. We have a seperate qualified GTAW weld procedure for groove butt welds which was qualified on ASTM A515 and A516 plate, and this is also listed as a P-1 in B31.1.
Is it permissable to use my A515 GTAW procedure for a root pass on the A106 Pipe and finish off with my SMAW procedure?

A Code reference would be helpful and thanks.
Tom

tc7;
Yes. However, why don't you use the PQR's from each separate WPS and write a new WPS for GTAW (root)/SMAW (fill)?

Met-
You're always quick to respond and I thank you very much for your help.

I do intend to write that new WPS for the combination, but I wanted to be sure that the seperate PQR's can "legally" support a two-process procedure without need for qualifying as a new entity.

Can you direct me to a paragraph number in any Code section that will help me convince my naysayers?

Thanks again,
V/VR
Tom

RE: ASME B31.1 Pipe Joint Combined WPS Question

Tom;
Review the 2004 Edition of ASME Section IX, Article 2,
QW-200.4

For that matter you should review QW-200.
