Error Creating/Patterning a Helical Sweep Cut

Error Creating/Patterning a Helical Sweep Cut

Error Creating/Patterning a Helical Sweep Cut

(OP)
SW06 SP4 and SP0

I have a shaft and on the shaft I have created two helixs(heli?). One clockwise an the other counter-clockwise both starting at the same point/same pitch/length  I am able to successfully create each sweep cut independently.  But I cannot pattern or generate the sweep with the clockwise helix.  The other sweep (counter-clockwise helix) can be patterned without a problem.

If I create a separate helix on the shaft instead of a pattern, I also get the same error.  Any ideas?  I can send my file if someone would like to see.

BTW:
The error is "Operation Failed Due to Geometric Condition"
No help there. :/

Thanks

RE: Error Creating/Patterning a Helical Sweep Cut

Perhaps try this:
Create the first helical cut and pattern.  Then the next helical cut and pattern.  (Rearrange in feature tree and then hit CTRL-Q.)

If that doesn't work, check to see if your helical cuts are leaving a tiny bit of solid material left over.  If so, simply start your helix a little distance from the solid you're cutting and continue it a bit past the solid.  Do this for each and see how it does.

RE: Error Creating/Patterning a Helical Sweep Cut

Make sure your cut section extends beyond the OD of the solid you are cutting.  SW's parasolid engine approximates helix sweep cuts, and if you are line-to-line with the OD vs. your cut section, this can cause problems.

Still No Luck..

I have created the Helices so that they extend beyond the limits of the solid shaft 1" above and below.  The sketch for each sweep is connected to each helix and in the center of the helix.  Any other suggestions.  I can create two original ones, cannot pattern.

Wow--that place sucked.  I don't think I'll make another attempt at that site for files--resized my browser off the window and attempted to extort a registry check.  Whatever.

Perhaps try posting the file at a better (non-scummy) site?

Jeff,

I reordered my tryy such that it looks like your screenshot and it did work....BUT, when I adjusted the sketches, it regenerated and I got the same error.  I have uploaded a new version of my part and try to suppress the pattern and you'll see that the second swept cut errors out when the pattern is unsuppressed and when it it suppressed, the second swept cut now works.  odd..

RE: Error Creating/Patterning a Helical Sweep Cut

There must be something funny happening with the geometry.  If these two cuts are essentially the same, you could cut the part in half and perhaps get rid of the problem, and then mirror your part again to obtain what you need.

I just did that and it seemed to work:

Check my assumptions, just in case.

Still No luck.  I double checked my Service Pack..it's 4. For some reason my install DIR say SP5.0.  hmmh.

anyways..
I tried several configurations..also, I tried one helix and a pattern..then a mirror.  I also tried a mirror then a pattern.  I can never get the 2nd feature to work... :/  This is becoming a headache.

RE: Error Creating/Patterning a Helical Sweep Cut

Maybe a reason to upgrade?  (I think it's strange, too, but I seemed to have gotten it to work with 2007.)
