321 Stainless Steel Casting

321 Stainless Steel Casting

321 Stainless Steel Casting

(OP)
I found 347 stainless steel casting valves installed in 321 stainless steel piping. Based on my memory, I never have seen any 321 casting material.
Could somebody enlighten me why there is no 321 casting?
Thanks a lot!

RE: 321 Stainless Steel Casting

321 contains titanium for chromium carbide stabilization; Ti will oxidize rapidly in the melt if exposed to air (e.g. in typical sand/investment casting processes).  The columbium-stabilized alloy 347 is replicated by cast alloy CF-8C.  Columbium I think is quite a bit more stable in the melt.

RE: 321 Stainless Steel Casting

There are some cast stabilized grades with a bit of each Ti and Nb (it hasn't been Cb since the 1940's).  You can cast 321, but you are more likely to have large oxide inclusions.

RE: 321 Stainless Steel Casting

You can make 321 castings with Ti additions. There is a minimum Ti requirement which is related to carbon content.

To make this large addition of Ti is a difficult issue. You have to take in vaporisation loss, fading effect, gassy metal(due to excessive FeTi addition).

Last year I made some castings in 321 ,but these were the problems faced

Bah.  The Europeans robbed Hatchett of the credit for discovery.  And I'll keep eating my freedom fries until they change back.
