Good evening dear all,
I have a question regarding HIC (Hydrogen Inducted Cracking) test on carbon steel plates (ASME SA516). Provided that the chemical composition of the steel is satisfactory (low sulphur content...), is it necessary to heat treat (normalize) the plate before performing the test? In other words, can the heat treatment be crucial for the final result of the test?

The heat treatment of the plate is in accordance with the material specification (SA 516) to meet mechanical property requirements and impact properties. For plates at or below 1.5" in thickness they can be supplied hot rolled or normalized by the Purchaser to assure impact requirements for low temperature service. For SA 516 plate in excess of 1.5" in thickness, the plate shall be supplied in a normalized condition, by specification.

The relevant information is in the NACE-TM0284, which is the Standard Testing Method for pipe and pressure vessel plate material evaluation for resistance to HIC. Since the hardness is the major issue with the resistance to HIC (and H2S), the heat treatment (and PWHT) is an important factor in increasing the mentioned plate resistance to HIC.
