Anti Virus and install problems

Anti Virus and install problems

Anti Virus and install problems

Anyone having any real life stories about NOT turning off the anti virus and installing without any problems?  I'm discussing this matter, due to the fact we are seeing all sorts of bizarre little problems since updating to 2007, and IT did not turn off the Anti-Virus.  I'm tired of arguing the issue.  Thanks,

SolidMaster,

We just had a guy in from SolidWorks last week.  The first thing he told us was to make sure any virus software is turned off.

I know, and even if you don't believe it, the effort required to stop the service before install/upgrade is about 15 seconds.  So, it shouldn't even be an arguement.

Listen to them, always shut it off!

Thanks,

RE: Anti Virus and install problems

Our IT is so paranoid they didn't allow us (well, allow us is even a misnomer.  They are the only ones with the ability) to shut of AV when installing.  That said, we haven't really had any problems that trace back to a faulty install.  However, if we did start having mysterious issues, AV would be one of my first guesses as to the cause.

Cor,

I was planning on using the search yesterday, but it was under maintenance.  And I was frustrated enough, that I had to start the thread.  It's tough, when people that know it all, don't....go figure?

Thanks,

ponder ... Was that a dig or sarcasm or humour or ???
My post was not a suggestion that you should have done a search. I knew the search function was offline. I was just stating that other threads had reported that a faulty install turned out to be the cause of their problems.

cor,

sorry if you took it that way.  I was really refering to internally here.  It's a complete flux though, somedays are worse than others.  For most part it's okay, but these type of senseless arguements with IT are not needed, for a guideline that SolidWorks and other companies use.

I've always valued your input on this forum, and again sorry if the text was a little vague.

Question: Why is it recommended to turn off anti-virus scanning when installing SolidWorks?

Answer: Many anti-virus applications do not allow for system resources to be updated if they are in use, so conflicts can occur with the installation. Symptoms of potential problems resulting from such conflicts may not be visible until later when certain functions within SolidWorks are not accessible or do not function properly. Disabling anti-virus software prior to installing software is a good general practice for installing any application.

If they don't follow this then they are to blame as you already know. If your IT does not listen i would take up with a higher person then them... maybe the VP or the President of the company... I would keep moving up the ladder to something of higher authority then them... who cares if you make some people mad... they should have listen to you in the first place. Your there to work not make friends.

RE: Anti Virus and install problems

Here is what our VAR told us.  And I have seen things happen to other engineers that do not happen on my system. They never want to take the time to do a clean reinstall. But every time something goes wrong they call me over. For example menu buttons disappearing, part models not showing up. (we all have SolidWorks approved hardware and drivers).

Brad,
Yes it is still recommended to turn off any and all protection software.
These software's have been getting more aggressive and causing more problems.
It's bad enough now that we state in the release notes the McAfee flags SolidWorks installation files as infected, then removes them.  That is sure nice of them.

RE: Anti Virus and install problems

Might be a relevant time to plug particular AV software.  I know that most places large enough to have an IT team won't be able to simply change software like that, but for smaller places (like mine), it's a piece of cake.

I've had several subscriptions of McAfee and Norton--until I finally wised up and read extensive reviews of other possibilities.  Unless something changes rather drastically, I'll not use either of the above-mentioned again.  They're terrible resource hogs and not entirely effective at what they claim to do.

As it stands now, I use Avast Pro for AV ($40/year) and the free ZoneAlarm for a firewall with no anti-spyware stuff.  The result is very little resources lost to system protection (see how much this stuff robs of RAM and processor use).  The last bit there was a decision made after using a combination of three free anti-spyware applications over at least a year of time.  I then noticed the resources they used to do their jobs, and uninstalled them.  Just to check, I reinstalled and ran the software several months later and my system came up clean.  I don't seem to have a problem without the software on the machine, so I don't use it.

More to the point of this thread, I've not had buggy installs as a result of AV being on during the install--but I don't leave it on, either.  When I do have a problem, I normally opt for a clean install with registry cleanings and reboots during the process to make sure I don't have any corrupted stuff left over.  I might note that I put commonly accessed documents out of my Program Files folder to a neutral (non-erased) location on a separate "files-only" hard drive so I don't encounter problems in reinstalls, such as data loss (templates, PhotoWorks materials, decals, scenes, and other items).
