Electro Magnetics & Stranded Cables

(OP)
Help reuired.
We are installing a MRI Scanner; question is the project manager has asked us to strip out the cabling to the lights and sockets as some one told him that we were supposed to use stranded cables rather than solid cables.

I have had a looked around the web and found no information, does any one know of a location, report, regulation or article where it recommends stranded cable.

RE: Electro Magnetics & Stranded Cables

There are specific requirements that the manufacturers set up as far as using any ferrous materials within the RF shield of an MRI room.  There is no requirement to have any specific type of conductor, stranded or otherwise.  You need to be careful of the types of lighting, most installations use a DC lighting system with incandescent, non-ferrous enclosed lighting fixtures.  We specify aluminum hardware and boxes.  Once the work passes through the Penetration Panel out of the MRI envelope, standard construction methods are used.

The unit manufacturer's, GE, Siemens, whomever.  Have very specific installation manuals which must be followed very closely.  They will have specific conductor size, type and length requirements.  I recommend contacting the specific manufacturer for all technical and environmental questions.

Good luck with your project.
