Preparation for painting

(OP)
I have a large, 1927, riveted steel hull that has been greased inside to prevent corrosion.I have scraped most of it off with hand tools but the rest will not burn off nor can I shift it with off-the-shelf spray and wipe surface preparation products.

Any suggestions?

Oven cleaner, rubber gloves ... and lots of ventilation.

Also try dishwashing detergent like cascade in powder form.

Have you tried steam cleaning?

You might check around to see if anyone in your area is water blasting with injected bicarbonate of soda. Also you might give Carolina Equipment a call.

RE: Preparation for painting

Grit blasting is how steel hulls are prepared for painting commercially. That can give you a bright metal finsih to SA2.5 standard.

Failing that - power tooling with wire brush.
