Corrosion resistance of 201 vs 304 SS.

We currently use 16 gauge 304 stainless steel for the outer enclosure of an autoclave.  The part does not see pressure but is exposed to a small amount of steam after each steriliztion cycle.  Does 201 stainless steel have comparable corrosion resistance to 304 in this environment?

RE: Corrosion resistance of 201 vs 304 SS.

201 SS should be OK (as long as they don't switch to hypochlorite sterilization, in which case 304 would also have problems). There have been reports of sub-standard 201 material, so use a reputable supplier. More info:

RE: Corrosion resistance of 201 vs 304 SS.

In neutral pH 201 and 304 should be very similar.  In practice it looks like 201 is a bit more sensitive.  Surface damage leads to easier staining than on 304.

Ken's other point concerning quality is well taken.  I have seen samples of strip that were sold as 201 and they were not even austenitic stainless.  They were mostly martensitic.
Specify alloys by UNS numbers and insist on knowing the mill of origin.  If someone does not want to tell you who melted and rolled the steel them move on to another supplier.
