Wallboard (aka Drywall aka Gyprock) Shearwall openings

Wallboard (aka Drywall aka Gyprock) Shearwall openings

Wallboard (aka Drywall aka Gyprock) Shearwall openings

Hello All;

     I was sure I had seen a provision for ignoring the effects of opening in a timber frame and drywall shear wall; and if memory serves it stipulated that the opening be restricted to a 1/3 height of wall height and a 1/3 of length opening width.  Does anyone recall seeing same, and do you know of a reference for this guidance?

Thanks in advance,

YS

Alternatively, I would really like to hear what you do consider as a restriction when working with openings in drywall shearwalls.

Thanks,

YS

The only shearwall with opening provisions that I know of apply to OSB or plywood sheathing.  With GWB, I assume each segment of wall between windows is a separate shearwall.
