PhotoWorks Memory Issue

PhotoWorks Memory Issue

PhotoWorks Memory Issue

(OP)
I keep getting an error while trying to render inside of PhotoWorks.  The error says that there is no more memory avaiable.

SolidWorks 2007 SP3.0
Intel Core 2 CPU
2.4GHz
2 GB RAM
Manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation
Card: Quadro FX 1500/PCI/SSE2
Driver: 6.14.10.8426

RE: PhotoWorks Memory Issue

How much RAM are you using at the time of the error (check your Windows Task Manager)?  RAM spikes when you attempt to render--perhaps you are actually running out?

I had this happen last fall when rendering a long animation for a huge assembly.  As soon as I told it to begin rendering the animation, the RAM spiked and SW crashed (and totally trashed the animation--again).

So--I enabled the /3GB switch, and bought myself a third GB of RAM.  Works great now, and I regularly use up 1.5GB of RAM for large or complex assemblies and parts.  Search this forum for /3GB switch (posted several times) and you'll have the details you need for doing this (it's not too difficult, but you need to consider some things before doing it).  Might also be posted in the FAQs (CorBlimeyLimey, if you haven't created a FAQ for this yet, I think it would be a great idea.)

Jeff,

Mem at crash = 1,366,128k
VM at crash = 1,449,620k

RE: PhotoWorks Memory Issue

If you aren't using the /3GB switch, I'd say that's your problem.  Apparently Windows likes to allocate at least half your total RAM to itself by default.  By using the /3GB switch, you allow your system to use up to 3GB of the total needed RAM in other applications--and Windows gets what's left over (over-simplified explanation, most likely).

Anyway, once you've got that much of your RAM used up and PhotoWorks spikes to render, you're hosed (or I was, anyway).  In this case, I'd recommend making the /3GB switch first, and get additional RAM only if that doesn't work.  The /3GB switch will enable you to use more of your RAM for SolidWorks, and you may have enough room to complete your rendering without more RAM.

RE: PhotoWorks Memory Issue

There were some problems with this in early SP of SW07... might check the Knowledge base at SW and see if they still apply to SP3.0

RE: PhotoWorks Memory Issue

Agree with Theophilus.  Those memory levels are almost exactly the same as when I was crashing before the /3G switch.  It's a fairly simple change to a batch file.  Do a lookup here to find out how to get it working.

Thanks for the help guys!! We did the /3GB switch but now SOlidWorks crashes right to the desktop.  I just did a pack and go and sent the files to tech support.

I will let you know my results.

RE: PhotoWorks Memory Issue

What do you have the Virtual Memory set to?

cheers

RE: PhotoWorks Memory Issue

Odd--all your specs look good (not sure about the graphics driver--haven't checked).
