Am I missing something ??

Am I missing something ??

Am I missing something ??

(OP)
SW2006  SP 5.0

Using Windows Explorer make a folder named Scrap, than copy a Part.SLDPRT into that folder. Using Windows Explorer rename that file to Part1.SLDPRT

Now, fire up SW and open up Part1.SLDPRT. Make some changes and than save Part1.SLDPRT

Close Part1.SLDPRT but do NOT exit SW.

Now using Windows Explorer try to rename the folder Scrap.

You can't, you get a message that the file is being used by another program.

How come ? I closed the Part1.SLDPRT - only SW itself is open - does it mean the SW still holds some "handles" to the Part1.SLDPRT and consequently Windows refuses to rename the file ??

To allow to rename the file I must Exit the SW.

Am I missing something here ??

RE: Am I missing something ??

I think that's pretty standard with Windows, regardless of the program. I just tried the exact same thing with MS Word and got the same error.

RE: Am I missing something ??

I used to have that happen a lot, but for quite a while now I have been able to rename files and folders immediately after saving and closing the part. I have no idea why or exactly when it changed.

cheers

RE: Am I missing something ??

SW (and many other apps) will hold open the last folder accessed to open a file.  If you used "File-->Open" to open another SW file in a different folder, SW would release the folder you are trying to rename.

RE: Am I missing something ??

I agree with the others.
It's always best to rename SW files using SW Explorer ... not Win Expl.
