O-Ring Squeak

O-Ring Squeak

O-Ring Squeak

(OP)
I have an existing product which uses a Buna-N O-ring to seal two ZAMAK components that rotate relative to each other. The O-ring seems to have a squeak during rotation: I've used PTFE & silicone lubrication to eliminate the noise but was wondering if changing the O-ring material would help. Anyone have any experience in this? Thanks in advance.

RE: O-Ring Squeak

First, make sure the component dimensions and tolerances conform _exactly_ to Parker's recommendations for the particular gland type in question.  Then, worry about other stuff.

You didn't tell us what you're trying to seal, so we can't comment on what seal materials or lubricants would be appropriate.  Your Parker rep or distributor can.

RE: O-Ring Squeak

Are you sure the squeak is not coming from metal-metal contact (i.e. have you tested parts in same load conditions but minus the O-ring)?

RE: O-Ring Squeak

All elastomer material is not the same. Just because you call it Buna-N, do not assume it. Compounds can very greatly and have the same hardness. When spec'ing/ordering, look at both the Shore A hardness and tensile strength. Suppliers often only talk in hardness.

Tolerance on the parts is also very large. A ptfe option may be something to consider. Assuming you are using a dashed unsplit o-ring. The ptfe may need to be replaced more frequently from cold flow, but will also act as a dry lubricant. Just a thought. However, this depends on parameters such as temps, speeds & pressures.

As discussed in earlier threads, do look at the dimensions, both theory and actual and also try without the o-ring as earlier recommended.

Surface finish where o-rings ride should also be inspected/reviewed.

Seal what?
At what differential pressure?
Rotate at what speed?
One direction rotation or both direction?
Continuous full rotation or part rotation (fewer than 360 degrees?
Temperature?
Environment?
