Can someone suggest the best grade of stainless steel for use in a marine environment? Parts are not submerged. Some are turned, some are springs; low cycle life.

RE: Best Stainless Steel for Marine Application

We normally use 304 or 316.

Cbert,  First, your question would probably be more appropriate for the "Stainless Steel for Engineers" group.  Next, you give way too little information for anyone to respond in other than a very generic (or sarcastic) way.  For starters, what marine environment; fresh water, salt water, leatherneck equipment, etc. (sorry!)?  What type of equipment; pleasure boats, offshore oil rigs, etc.  In other words, make it sound like you have done a LITTLE work on the problem yourself.

Good luck.

Thanks.

RE: Best Stainless Steel for Marine Application

Normally I would recommend 2205 or better.  If the parts are in contact with Al then you can get away with 316L since the Al will provide galvanic protection.
For springs you need to use even more corrosion resistant materials.  No 300 series stainless is suitable for high stress use in a salt water environment.  Maybe a 6%Mo stainless (AL-6XN) should be considered.
