New 22" FP monitor

New 22" FP monitor

RE: New 22" FP monitor

I forgot to mention--we threw away our TV.  (So?)  Well, this monitor has just about every input possible, including HDMI (whatever that is).  This means (I think) we can plug in our old VCR so I can still see the true Star Wars tapes I have (wide-screen) without having a TV.  Same for my PS2, I think--just need a decent sound card and I ought to be up and running with only a single huge display in the house.

Some things to keep in mind regarding monitors:
Viewing angles (go for wide, horizontal and vertical)
Big contrast
Quick refresh rates
Gray color display (HUGE factor in my decision--I render a lot and cheap LCDs cannot compare with the old 21" ViewSonic CRT I used to use as my primary monitor--I recommend viewing a monitor "in real life" before buying)

RE: New 22" FP monitor

Jeff ... Can you explain what you mean by "Gray color display"?

cheers

RE: New 22" FP monitor

Sure--when the color begins to darken in areas of an image, the gray often trails off into blackness (or sometimes seen as a sort of dark metallic color).  This is terrible, since all areas in a shadowed region begin to look alike--so if I render a black or dark gray produce, I really cannot see what I'm getting since all the detail is washed away.

After working on this monitor a while, I'm now used to the more "sharp" display of an LCD, but every time I pass by cheap monitors in the store I really cringe--that gray-black issue is very bad in most of those displays.

Another test--check out the darker regions of an image at a slight angle to the monitor and see how quickly the detail becomes lost in those regions as you increase your angle.

This particular Gateway I'm using was expensive when I bought it (maybe still is), but it's about the only feasible LCD I could find that would handle my qualifications.

RE: New 22" FP monitor

I have the same monitor (at home) as Jeff. I like it.

RE: New 22" FP monitor

I love my 24" Dell Monitor... My next Monitor has to be bigger then 24"... I can't go backwards anymore... I am to big now.

24" provides much more area then the 21" does. 3" may not be much, but it is when you use 1900 resolution.

Good luck,

RE: New 22" FP monitor

All the CATIA guys here have dual monitors. They may be approx 19" each, maybe a bit bigger.

RE: New 22" FP monitor

We just got our 24 3 weeks ago. I can not see going back to my 19 anytime soon. I used 2 19before and it was great for somethings but this is by far the greatest cad tool in a while.

The bigger the tool, the better the CAD.
