I am lokking for a definition of field voltage and armature voltage that can be traced to an auditable source of reference

It sounds like you should go to the IEEE dictionary.

gordonl—that's a good idea.  Also, some definitions in  "IEEE Std. 100" have references to other IEEE/(ANSI) guides/standards.   One potential hitch—If a particular standard is used to define operation or characteristics defined in an RFQ/RFP/purchase order, usually the reference needs to be listed in the procurement text.
