Fire alarm wiring requirements

Fire alarm wiring requirements

Fire alarm wiring requirements

(OP)
Once again I am coming to the fountain of knowledge to help me out here.  I have been asked to wire a fire alarm system for a water treatment plant.  The system will be composed of a fire alarm control panel, smoke detectors, manual pull stations and strobe lights.  Does anyone know of the specific wiring that takes place between these devices?  I would expect to have an input circuit from the smoke detectors, and another input circuit from the manual pull stations.  I assume there would also be an output circuit to all strobe lights.  If I am off base please let me know.

What I would like to know is how are the typical wiring requirements for a system like this.  Are there two wires to each pull station, smoke detector and strobe light?  Any knowledge of the fire alarm system would be appreciated.

Thanks

RE: Fire alarm wiring requirements

Well that all depends on which type of system you want.  Most modern systems are digital addressable systems which require a data line to all devices, (usually a pair or two of low voltage wires), then the power wiring to strobes, horns, fire and smoke dampers, etc....  Each manufacturer differs.  EST, Notifier,Simplex, etc..., all have their standards.  It is easy to get their assistance, most will even give you basic layouts, details and wiring diagrams.  I would recommend contacting one of them first.  You should be carefull in selecting the types of devices as there are many initiating devices which are designed for specific atmosphere's.  I don't know if there is a high humidity or chemical fume issue in your plant but that might impact wether you select photoelectric, infrred or beam type detectors.

RE: Fire alarm wiring requirements

With the addressable systems you often must use firealarm rated, data capable cable. This would be a twisted pair that may or may not be shielded.
The power for strobes and horns may in some systems be building wire.
Follow EEJaime's advice and contact the prospective suppliers.
