How To Replace An Inserted Part (Base Part) In A Part?

How To Replace An Inserted Part (Base Part) In A Part?

(OP)
In an assembly the Replace Components function exists. Is there an equivalent function for replacing a base part (Insert > Part) in a part?

cheers

CBL:

Everythign we've seen here with the Insert>Part feature in a Part says that once a part is in that is it, it's in. I don't think there is an equivalent feature at the Part level of the REplace part assembly command.

RE: How To Replace An Inserted Part (Base Part) In A Part?

Can you not just edit the references in the part containing the inserted base part to reference your desired base part?

Similar to switching references in a drawing?

That was the first thing that I tried. It looked like it was going to work ... but didn't change anything. sad

This will do it......

1) Open the finished part.
2) Edit the base part.
3) FILE - SAVE AS - New base part number.
4) CTRL-TAB back to the finished part so it updates and SAVE.

Now if you have to, you can substitute base parts/ part numbers. (or modify the original base part to suit..)

Also this will work without having to do a save as. In the Open Dialog Box, browse to the file that you want to change the reference in.  Select the file but do not open it.  Click on the button for "References" in the Open Dialog Box.  A new window will pop up.  Here you can double click on the entry under "New pathname" and browse for and select a part file to change the reference.  Once you have selected the part, click "OK" and then open the file.  The reference will now be replaced.  You will have to click save once the file is opened to save this file with the new reference info...

CBL - I'm on SWX 2006, SP4.0 and the reference change works for me.  At first glance it appears not to because the feature name of the insert part feature doesn't update, but the geometry sure does.

dgowans ... You are correct. I did not look close enough. At home the feature name changed, but at work it did not.

Thank you. thumbsup2

meintsi ... Thank you but the parts I am inserting as Base Parts already exist and have been used elsewhere.

cheers
