Hi every one
I would like to know whats the techniques can be used to locate any fault in MV Overhead line ?

RE: O.H.L

What kind of earthing/grounding method do you use? Solid, resistive/reactance or ungrounded? This will make a difference because on an ungrounded system you can leave the power on with say a groundfault, while it would not be possible on the other networks. Also, what kind of OHL do you refer to? Single straight line or a line with different segments?

But yes, actually Keith's way is the easiest and cheapest solution!

On some systems the fault isa located as a function of distance from a substation (impedance relays), but it is more in use on transmission-lines - HV, EHV and UHV systems. I have not seen it been used on MV-systems - but it might work on a long line with no T-offs.

Sometimes it is not easy to spot failures, like a crack on an insulator. On a big network (lots of T-offs and segments) the best would be to use the test and eliminate technique - divide the line in different segments and eliminate the healthy sections - working towards the fault.

Hope it helps

Ralph

I thought that they'd discovered that viewing in ultra violet showed up some faults (cracked insulators etc.)
