pins breaking point

I would like to know how many tons of pressure  a .625 pin made of A2 steel could handle before it breaks. If there is a formula i would also like to know it for future reference. Thank you

RE: pins breaking point

In shear or tension?

The pin is in shear

RE: pins breaking point

It's just the cross-sectional area of the pin (pi x r x r) multiplied by the shear strength of the metal.  If it's in double-shear (like a clevis pin), then you can basically double this figure.

Kurt98,

If eromlignod did not answer your question then you probably do not know the shear strength.  If you still need help, let us know what is the hardness of the A2 or the tempering temperaure one or the other and I think I can find the shear strength in my Tool Steel text or Metals Handbook.

RE: pins breaking point

What type of a steel A2 is?  I am familiar with A36, A55 and the A2XXX series but not A2.

RE: pins breaking point

A2 is a medium-alloy cold worked tool steel, which uses air as its quenching medium. The temperature range is 1700F-1800F. Tempering temperature is 350F-1000F. The resulting hardness is 62-57 Rc. Hope this helps.
