Temperature Correction for Liquid Flow

Temperature Correction for Liquid Flow

Temperature Correction for Liquid Flow

(OP)
Hi All,
I have to prepare mass balance report and that involves the correction of flows as shown by orifice meter to it design P and T values.Could you help me about it??The fluids are Naphtha and Gas oil boiling cuts.
Regards.

RE: Temperature Correction for Liquid Flow

mass flow in an orifice meter
lb/hr = c*Fb * sqrt(Dp * Density)

where Fb= coefficient discharge
c= constant 6.02 (if I remember right)
Dp = inches water
Density = lb/ft^3

The GPSA data book is a good reference, otherwise Miller.

RE: Temperature Correction for Liquid Flow

Dear sav455,
A reasonably accurate correction ( without considering the orifice and pipe dia variation due to temperature) is as follows:
You need the following inputs for liquid :
1. The design density ( at design op temperature)
2. The actual liquid density at standard temperature.
3.The actual temperature at the orifice.
Calculation:
1. Calculate the actual liquid density at the actual temperature at the orice using standard tables.
2. Calculate the correction factor as
 Sqrt( actual density at orifice at operating  temp/ design density at design temp used in meter)
3. Use this factor to multiply the indicated flow.
In case you need to correct for Gas, ask again.
Best wishes

Thanks Reena and dcasto,
I appreciate.My problem is that I have to supply the information to a software which is supposed to do the mass balance.To my understanding as yet,It requires me to give the correction for density in form of some mathematical formula.The values of of density in tables would probably require a manual input.
The literature search that I did told me to use Standing - Katz correlation for liquid petroleum oils mixtures density calculation for pressure and temperature.
Can I get some more information about this??
Regards.

The correction in Hydrocarbon densities as consecuence of density is collected in API 1250. It give you the mathematical formula to get the right density at the working temperature and at 15ÂșC. You can find it via google

RE: Temperature Correction for Liquid Flow

A correction: the right API procedure is--> API 2540 and ASTM D-1250

Sorry for the mistake

Thanks Hanon.
So, first thing is to find the API standard.
