adjustable assemblies again

adjustable assemblies again

adjustable assemblies again

(OP)
I want to position a part in a sub assembly relative to a part in a higher assembly.  I use adjustable assembly to move the part into position.  Now I want to go back to the sub to add other parts but I have to redefine the sub as a rigid assembly.  How can I edit the sub with the parts in the correct position?

RE: adjustable assemblies again

Hi,

an adjustable assembly can't be edited in the context
of an assembly. To edit you have to openen it or as you
have done it: make it rigid, which may cause problems when
switching back to adjustable.

RE: adjustable assemblies again

Hmm, I've only used them a little and I'm not sure I've come across this.

The one thing we have been doing in the few we've made is to suppress the adjustable assembly’s relationship in the  'direction' of motion rather than leaving it out completely.  Then if you need to turn it back on you don't have to recreate it.

I actually asked a trainer we had about adjustable assemblies and turned out I already knew more than him.

Thanks dy,

I was afraid that would be the answer.  I believe for my purpose I should constrain the sub via a sketch derived from part geometry included from the higher assembly.  Will this be a problem if I want to use the sub in other assembies that don't contain the higher assembly geometry?

Is there a way to break all links in assembly at one time?

RE: adjustable assemblies again

The following was posted on the UGS usergroup of Solid Edge by Aditya Gurushankar (a SE developer) with regards to adjustable assemblies.

"In the assembly that you want to make adjustable, make sure the base part
is grounded and not constrained to reference planes/sketches/coordinate
systems etc. Also, ensure that other parts in the assembly are not
constrained to reference planes/sketches/coordinate systems etc. Reference
planes etc are considered fixed geometries and parts constrained to them
will not move as expected. Ground constraints in an adjustable sub-asm are
ignored, so it is ok to ground the base part. This is the most common
problem users face.
- With adjustable sub-assemblies, the sub-assembly itself is not being
positioned. It helps to visualize that the parts and relations under the
adjustable sub-asm are solved in the context of the top assembly. If you get
a inconsistent model, it helps to review the relations with this in mind.

Luc - Adjustable parts in an adjustable assembly was supported starting SE
v18.

Hope these help,

RE: adjustable assemblies again

You know, I'm really starting to think this might be an area worth a tutorial.

I just looked in SE help and there doesn't appear to be one.
