Knurling of SAE 841 oil-impregnated, sintered bronze?

Knurling of SAE 841 oil-impregnated, sintered bronze?

Knurling of SAE 841 oil-impregnated, sintered bronze?

(OP)
I'm considering a part made of either brass or oilite bronze.  I'd prefer to use bronze but have never seen it knurled.  I know that brass knurls well... Does the Tin content cause any issues with knurling of oilite bronze?  Does the sintered construction create any issues for knurling?

Thanks,

Soil out.

RE: Knurling of SAE 841 oil-impregnated, sintered bronze?

Soilent,

Never tried knurling an oilite bushing, but would suspect that it will tend to fracture and turn (back) to powder well before a decent knurl impression could be made.  If you try to go this route, suggest you conact Symmco, they make a very good, high-strength sintered bushing.

Sintered bronze bushings have 12-15% porosity, for them to act as self lubricating . Tin does not exist as a separate element but is in solid solution with copper.

Performing a knurlng action might lead to damage of the pores and material surrounding it.
