Large drawing to DWG

Large drawing to DWG

Large drawing to DWG

(OP)
Hi All,

I have a drawing file that is edging near the 25 meg line.

I was wondering what is the best way to convert it into a DWG file (ie. what settings are best). My client is using an old version of AutoCAD Lt so I need to output it in AutoCAD 2002-2004 format, but every time I try to "save as" Solidworks crashes.

Thanks for any help.

RE: Large drawing to DWG

Hi overkill

I would go about fixing this by process of elimination

Is it possible to break this existing slddrw file down into seperate views each saved as a seperate slddrw file.

By doing that you may find one view is causing the crashing behaviour.

Also try changing the text styles to ones you know autocad LT will read.  Sometimes true type fonts cause strange problems.

Try deleting any gifs or jpegs that may be embedded in the solidworks file.

Can you convert to dxf without crashing ?

Best Regards

Yah dxf output crashes as well.

I'll try suppressing certain sub-assemblies, and then outputting.

Thanks

RE: Large drawing to DWG

Can you create an eDrawing executable instead? ... or PDF?

What are your computer specs ... RAM, VM, /3GB switch, etc?

cheers

RE: Large drawing to DWG

Possibly making it a detached slddrw, then converting.

I can create an Edrawings but my client likes to be able to use Autocad to measure whatever he wants.

Cheers

You can measure with eDrawings if the option is selected when creating the file.

The big problem is that they like to drop my work into their AutoCAD Layouts. So measuring isn't the only issue.

Thanks for the responses. I'll post again once I've tried some more methods.

Are you using the /3GB switch?

cheers

RE: Large drawing to DWG

You speak about large drawing.
Maybe your system hadn't finished to calculate all views.

We you open a drawing, maybe you can see an "sand glass" on view in the feature tree.
It corresponds to the view calculation.

If you wait for the disappearance of the "sand glass" before "save as" command, maybe your system wouldn't crash.

My advice is :
1- you open the drawing
2- you resolve the attached documents
3- you press the "Ctrl+q" key to fore rebuild
4- you wait for the disappearance of the "sand glass"
5- you save the drawing in Sldwks format(slddrw)
6- and then you try to export your drawing in dwg.

I'm not sure, my advice will work for your problem, but it's a method which can be used on export pb.
