Welding API 5L Pipe

Welding API 5L Pipe

Welding API 5L Pipe

(OP)
There is a project where API 5L-B is being used for clean storm water piping in a local refinery.  There was not enough material ordered to finish the project.  I have been asked if subtituting API 5L-X42 is a viable option for the shorted materials.

My question is will there be any general issues to consider regarding weld procedures by joining the grades B and X42 materials (i.e., p-number, group number).  I know these materials are not covered in ASME Section II.  I do not know what WPS/PQR that is being used to join the grade B-to-grade B pipe, but are there any issues that may arise that will require a different WPS/PQR to be used by joining grade B-to-grade X42?

RE: Welding API 5L Pipe

I suppose you can use the welding process bellow after qualifying it.

1    GTAW    ER 70S-G

2    SMAW    E 7018-1

remaining passes with SMAW    E 7018-1

Same procedure will be just fine for both X42 and 52.  You can weld them together quite easily.  Most X42 is really X52 these days anyway.

RE: Welding API 5L Pipe

API-5L Grade B is considered a P-No 1, Gr 1 material, as is API 5L X-42. Both materials weld the same, just follow preheat requirements for thickness, if applicable.
