Minor gripes

Minor gripes

Minor gripes

(OP)
At first I didn't think much of it, but now I'm noticing more and more SW hangs randomly when opening some models or drawings. Not only do I get the "Can not save file error", but I also experience these random hangs, where SW is trying to open a drawing that references a few models and it hangs half way into the opening and I have to kill the app. Or sometimes I just open a small assembly and it hangs.
So I was wondering if anybody else is experiencing this, or maybe something is wrong with my system / installation / models..

RE: Minor gripes

Please provide your computer specs, the more detail teh easier it will be to help.  I seriously doubt it is SW related.

Have you read FAQ731-376 to make the best use of Eng-Tips Forums?

his specs ... thread559-178809
Do you have stand alone SW or network version?
If network, what version do you have of SW, PDMW on your pc compared to the server versions?

RE: Minor gripes

Also which add-ins do you have activated?

cheers

My SolidWorks 2007 SP2.0 is stand alone, although My toolbox is on the network. I am running PDM on another Shared PC which is dedicated to PDM works

Add ins that are on by default

eDrawings
Featureworks
PDMWorks Workgroup 2007
SW Animator
SW Toolbox
SW Toolbox Browser
SW Utilities
3DControl (for Space Explorer)

I have not tried disabling the Space Explorer, I will and see what happens.

RE: Minor gripes

It's best to run add-ins only while you need them.

Unless you are actively using eDrawings, FeatureWorks, Animator and Utilities, de-activate them. It takes just a few seconds to re-activate them when needed.

cheers

RE: Minor gripes

Toolbox over a network could be a big problem (considering the assembly stops loading parts mid-way).  Consider shutting it off and seeing what happens.

I have eDrawings, Animator, PhotoWorks and Toolbox active all the time and never experience such problems--but I do nothing over a network, either.

RE: Minor gripes

I have the same as Jeff, but I am working off the network. No problems ... so far.

I should clarify my toolbox, When I need them I get new features from my network toolbox, but they are copied into the assembly model and have no reference back to the network. At least I think so!!!

I will try disabling those addins that I don't use often

RE: Minor gripes

Perhaps make sure you know where your stock Toolbox folder is--if on the network, make sure you have "access" to read/write across the network--and whether there may be other snags along the way.  It might not be a bad idea to change your default Toolbox location (but that could be a headache)--so doing some of these preliminary checks may pay off quicker.

Jeff, there is another SW user in our dept. He also uses the common toolbox on our network. He is a little behind me as far as hands on time with SW, but I don't think he has had any problems. I'm not sure moving our Toolbox would make sense. I have readwrite to the toolbox stuff, and I am the admin for SW & PDMW.

Thanks,
Tom
