Date format for printed thank you note.

Date format for printed thank you note.

Date format for printed thank you note.

(OP)
Which is correct to include on a printed Thank You note?

1) March 10, 2007

2) March 10th, 2007

I think #1 is correct but I always pronounce like #2.

Please advise.

#1
You should never write what you pronounce.
Especially from the South.thumbsup2

A thank you note should be handwritten, not printed.

I hear that ctopher!

These aren't thank you notes for gifts received. My wife is making some cute little boxes with some candy covered almonds inside for wedding guests of a friend and she was going to attach a little note on each one thanking the guests for sharing the occasion and also noting the the name of the bride and groom and the wedding date.

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

As a Brit I'd say 10th March 2007,

If in US I'd vote for #2

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

Yes, we could learn a lot by revisiting 3rd grade.

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

Or by having Jeff Foxworthy ask us fifth grade questions.

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

why not the julian format ?

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

I like th or st

10 May or what ever sounds dumb.

However I got a C in English (in England) and I'm dyslexic so why the #$%#$ would you want to listen to me!

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

The date format should not have "th" or "st" included.  These are pronounced with such only at the reader's discretion.  Use "th" or "st" if you are quoting someone saying the date.

It would be nice to coordinate the font and format with the rest of the printed material to be distributed, but do that through the bride or the planner so the printer doesn't get his knickers in a twist.

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

As a slight digression, the only date that Americans write down the same way as us Brits is "The 4th of July".  The irony pleases me.

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

As they said in Star Wars, "May the 4th be with you..."

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

Sompting, as a Brit now in the US I too appreciate that, I'd never really thought about it though.  Thanks.

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

I worked near Heathrow for a year with a bunch of my fellow Americans...some of us had a hard time keeping our US holidays straight.

One of the guys I worked with (the word "bloke" fit him perfectly, even though he was American) asked a bunch of the natives what they were doing for the 4th of July...

We all just kind of stared at him and someone finally said, "uh, Dave, they don't really celebrate that here..."

It was funny, though...of all the holidays we celebrate, blowing off British rule is one of the stranger ones, I guess!  Bygones...about 25 of us had a nice dinner that night at a little Italian restaurant in Windsor and did our part to keep the British economy going.  My boss yelled at me for putting the 1,000 pound tab on my credit card.  That was a great night - really helped us all bond.  winky smile

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

"uh, Dave, they don't really celebrate that here..."

Absolutely.  We simply don't have time to celebrate all those independence days we've been involved in.

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

It would be an extensive list!

On the other hand, Brits back in the UK still celebrate the day hundreds of years ago when some catholics tried, and failed, to blow up the parliament (protestant).  I just couldn't get people here interested in Guy Fawkes night, they're all too busy with Halloween the week before.

The similarity between the 2 holidays, Fireworks.

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

Honestly, every time we went to a pub it was decorated for some holiday or other...it's "any excuse for a party" in your country.

We sure used your holidays to our advantage, though - I think I even remember a "St. George's day" or something like that?  We never had trouble finding a reason to drink!

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

St George, Patron Saint of England, his saints day is  23rd April, not April 23 as he’s the Patron Saint of Englandwinky smile.  I heard their was some question over whether he was a saint anymore, apparently they doubt whether he actually slew a dragon.

Anyway there’s always a reason for a pint (all 20 ounces not a measly 16) of near room temperature beer, pork scratchings, overpriced crisps, pickled eggs, steak & kidney pie, buxom barmaids, friendly disagreements over ‘who spilt my pint’ and all the other joys of a good English Pub.

But this is really off topic.

RE: Date format for printed thank you note.

KENAT,

Going for a game of football tonight (for you Americans...soccer). Will probably partake of a few of the above.

Now back to the OP.......

So far as I can see its pretty straightforward....what you say and what is written in a formal letter/memo have drifted apart over the last few decades. This is merely an evolution of the English language (the Americans having been doing it for a while now).

For a formal date format, look no further than the BBC (the great bastion of the older English language) and you will see..... Thursday 8th March 2007 is todays date...

prohammy, just a few, I think my opinion of you has loweredsmile

Sompting, hmm maybe I will.  Of course a 'pint and a fight' in my part of the world would probably get me killed, imprisoned and/or deported.

Maybe I'll leave it.

As regards date format, I'll go with the BBC on this one.
