ANSI Refinery Specs for Paint Color

ANSI Refinery Specs for Paint Color

ANSI Refinery Specs for Paint Color

(OP)
I have a client that has asked if the colors of paint we are proposing to use to coat new piping agrees with ANSI Refinery Specs.  I have axhausted all resource and can not find a document that recommends that a specific color paint be used to designate the fluid the piping is carrying.  From my experience each refinery is has different color schemes, however, most of the time firewater is red, fuel gas/natural gas is yellow, plant air/instrument air is blue.  Thanks for any insight.

RE: ANSI Refinery Specs for Paint Color

I have never heard of a color specification. In our refinery red is fire water and yellow is nitrogen.  Nothing else is color coded.

lcmechengr,

Refer to ANSI A13.1 - Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems.

The above standard is intended to establish a common system in identifying hazardous materials conveyed in pipe systems.

RE: ANSI Refinery Specs for Paint Color

The basis of ASME A13.1 was developed for power about a century ago.  ASME A13.1 references ANSI Z535.1 Safety Color Code.  In A13.1 yellow is anything hazardous such as flammable, reactive, toxic, etc.  Green is low hazard liquid and blue is low hazard gas.  Fire extinguishing agents are red.

That basis would mostly have red piping in a refinery or chemical plant.

Other standards pertaining to color follow:
API RP 1637 for equipment
API STD 1542 and ASTM D 2392 for aviation fuel
ASTM D 1500 Petroleum product colors
ASTM D 1535 Munsell color system
ASTM D 2244 Color tolerances
ASTM D 2616 Color difference gray scale
ASTM D 3964 Coating appearance
ASTM D 5326 Latex color
ASTM D 5382 Powder coat color
ASTM E 1360 Uniform color scale
ASTM E 1541 Color curve
ASTM E 308 Colors by CIE system
ASTM E 805 Instrumental color difference
EIA 359 A Colors
Federal Standard FS.595a/595B paints by numbers

To JPellin, I've seen many times circulating cooling water headers and distributing lines painted blue.
