PLC 24 VDC output vs. Test bench 24 VDC output

PLC 24 VDC output vs. Test bench 24 VDC output

(OP)
Hello,

I am working on a 24 VDC Burkert Solenoid Valve. When bench testing it with a regular switching 24 VDC power supply I was unable to get the solenoid to engage but when re-installing the valve into service the PLC can drive the solenoid with no problems.
I am wondering why a PLC can drive the solenoid but a power supply in my shop can't. Anyone have an idea?

Thanks,
Adam

RE: PLC 24 VDC output vs. Test bench 24 VDC output

Your benchtop supply probably has "foldback current limiting", which is a feature used to protect experimental circuits from destruction.   It's not so useful in testing serious loads with high inrush currents.

Happened to me 35 years ago; a small 12A/24VDC linear actuator drew a peak of  ~275A when first switched on ...  from a battery.  Our QC department had declared it DOA when their 15A supply wouldn't start it.

I agree, very common feature on benchtop power supplies.
