Material Selection of King Pin End Cap

Material Selection of King Pin End Cap

Material Selection of King Pin End Cap

(OP)
Without being insulting, the author fully realizes that the question posed is about as basic as it gets.  I need help in selecting great literature/information on carbon steel round bar for an automotive manufacturing application.

QUESTION:
Would someone please suggest the best website and/or literature - listing physical properties and typical applications to help select carbon steel round bar for manufacturing?

We are a small engineering supply company competing with the big guys.  So many choices - so little time!

APPLICATION:
* Automotive manufactured carbon steel product.
* Front-end axle product for semi-trucks & off the road vehicles.
* Pressed fit end cap for king pin ends - top and bottom.  Once in place doesn't move.
* Part exposed to the environment - corrosion is acceptable.
* Traditionally, have supplied the OEM's a stamped expansion plug that gets pressed in place (SAE 1010 CR sheet metal - .083 thick)

APPLICATION CHANGE:
* Several truck OEM's have changed spindle and axle configurations.
* OEM's are now desirous for use to supply a machined end cap (it will either be pressed in or screwed in place)
* Function of new product will be the same, but the type of product will be different - change from an expansion plug to an end cap.
* New product will not be heat treated.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
* material cost
* machinability (ease of machinability, labor cost and tooling costs including tool wear)
* critical mechanical properties
~ UTS
~ toughness
~ initial hardness
~ surface hardness

Thank you!

RE: Material Selection of King Pin End Cap

Kaiserman:

No need for the intial apology - we all start somewhere or get thrown into projects some place.

Great place to start for material selections are ASTM standards.

For your particular application start with ASTM A400-69 and ask questions from there.

Good Luck!
