Threading Standard 60-ksi Rebar

Threading Standard 60-ksi Rebar

(OP)
I'm working on designing and embeded, cast-in-place anchor, that I can use a standard heavy hex nut to connect the base plate to.  However, the tensile loads are too high and spaced too close to use typcial j-bolts or headed studs.  As such, I would rather have a rebar that is threaded on one end as I feel the loads would be better distributed.  However, I am unsure of the affects of machining/carving the threads into a standard rebar on the structural integrity of the bar, espicially the frictional heating and the possible polarization during the lathing process.  I've seen that several construction material suppliers have threaded rebar products, but they are generally threaded to accept a coupler, and may not conform to the UNC threading that the heavy hex nuts are made for.  So my biggest question is whether or not there is an ACI, etc., approved procedure for threading deformed reinforcement adn whether anyone has any comments and/or suggestions regarding this idea.

Thanks,

Lafayette

If I need the load capacity for uplift, I usually use Dywidag threadbar... the nuts are a little pricey, but you can treat the embedment like conventinal reinforcing... else, I just use headed bolts, or regular bar threaded with an oversized nut.

Good site.

Try smooth bars, not deformed for the threading.  J bars are de-rated compared to headed anchor rods and should be used only for axially loaded compression members.
