The simulations are copying each other

The simulations are copying each other

The simulations are copying each other

(OP)
Hi,

I'm comparing different sizes of a mechanical mechanism.  I've been trying different methods to do this efficiently.  First, I rescaled the mechanism in my CAD program and then updated the geometry in ANSYS.  This works, I guess, but ANSYS keeps reseting the contact conditions, forces, etc. everytime I do this.  And that makes it a very time consuming method.  Now, I'm trying to use several simulations in my ANSYS project, and evaluate different sizes in each simulation.  I was hoping that I would be able to switch easily between different sizes that way.  But, the simulations insist on being identical copies of each other!  If I change something in one simulation, the same change automatically occurs in all the other simulations!  Even the geometry insists on being identical among the simulations.

How can I disconect the simulations in my project?

RE: The simulations are copying each other

What kind of Ansys Version are you using??? You can not simply replace some geometry without clearing the database, if I understand wright...

RE: The simulations are copying each other

This sounds like problems I was having, but I need a few clarifications first.  Are you using ANSYS Classic or Workbench - sounds like Workbench, but this is important?  Second, what CAD software are you using and how are you getting the geometry into ANSYS?

RE: The simulations are copying each other

Sounds like Workbench.  You shouldn't have a problem as long as you're duplicating the Model branch of your analysis.  I'm sure you know this, but simply right click on 'Model', hit duplicate, and then you'll see a 'Model 2' appear below it.  Any geometry/contact/force/constraint modifications you make in model 2 will be independent of model 1.

If you're doing this by just doing a Save As... to a different file name, I can see how it would be easy to overwrite past analyses, but you should also be able to separate everything.

The benefit of having multiple 'Model' branches in your 'Project' is that you can switch back and forth between results/environments to compare and evaluate the two designs.  The downside is that it increases the size of your .dsdb file.

Hope this helps,
Doug

Thanks!

It's correct that I'm using Workbench (v 10.0).  And I import GIS models.

Doug, I can create several models in the same project.  I cannot duplicate models the way you describe, it seems, but I can click on "New Simulation" in the left field and produce new models that way.  "New Simulation" adds model1, model2.. and they insists on always being interconnected and identical.

Mihaiupb, yes, that's right.  It would be quite lovely if I could update the geometry, which in all essentials is the same (just different size), without resetting everything else in the simulation.

Thanks again.

Doug, I discovered that I can duplicate models the way you suggest.  And when I do it that way, the models are independent of each other.  Before, I was trying to create new models from the "Project" tab, which was a significantly less successful approach.

I noticed another odd thing in the "Project" tab.  If I click on one of my models which appear in that tab, I get a number of model-options in the left hand field of the screen.  If I click at "delete" in this field, it causes WB to crash.

For some reson, I'm now able to update the geometry just the way I wanted the whole time.  It works like a charm.  Perhaps the problem was caused by the fact that I created additional model from within the "Project" tab.  Perhaps I bumped into a bug

Thanks for giving me some alternatives to try.

Pingen,

Not sure why it would crash on you like that.  Make sure you're running with the Service Packs installed (for 10.0 there are 2 Service Packs).  If that doesn't fix the problem, I would contact your local ANSYS support distributor, if they can't resolve the issue they can forward it up to ANSYS.

Glad something worked for you.

Doug

Thanks for the tip, Doug.
