chloride content of ATM tanks

chloride content of ATM tanks

chloride content of ATM tanks

(OP)
Hi All

Our ATM. tanks contractor is going to perform hydrotest with 1000 ppm chloride content water.Material is carbon steel.
Let me know your idea that this quantity(1000 ppm) is acceptable?

Thank you

RE: chloride content of ATM tanks

farzam,

Generally speaking, the 1000ppm chloride content in test water is high for both carbon and stainless steel plate. However, smaller tanks tested at around 10-15 deg C for 1 hour can be drained reasonable quick and perhaps flushed with clean or treated water with less than, say, 50 ppm chlorides. Larger tanks may be hydrotested even with sea water, provided that the water temperature does not exceed say 30 deg C and there is provision for flushing / rinse with treated water after the draining of the tank. I would be, however concerned with the exposure of an austenitic stainless steel tank, to extended period of time, to sea water, even at cooler ambient temperature. Also, the flushing of the S/S tanks require more attention, to avoid the posibility of further concentrating the chlorides due to water evaporation. Other than that, a short time exposure of carbon steel or stainless steel to 1000 ppm chlorides at relative low temperature, is not leading to material deterioration.
Cheers,
