chloride content for hydrotest

chloride content for hydrotest

(OP)
Hi All

Our ATM. tanks contractor is going to perform hydrotest with 1000 ppm chloride content water.Material is carbon steel.
Let me know your idea that this quantity(1000 ppm) is acceptable?

Thank you

RE: chloride content for hydrotest

Is there a floating roof, and if so, is it Steel, Stainless steel or Aluminum?

Dear IFRs

We have floating roof and fixed roof tanks also.Material for shell and roof is C.S.

RE: chloride content for hydrotest

That is a fairly high chloride content.  In perspective, drinking water is to be below 4ppm.  I have seen Lime storage tanks around 250, typically lined.  If they have to do it, I may permit it, if they agreed to rinse the internals with clean water prior to putting the tank into service.

RE: chloride content for hydrotest

banu.....

You will damage your carbon steel tanks permanently at that high of a chloride level. The industry standard for CS tanks is much lower.

Did you ask the contractor for a warantee against pitting, or is he just going to erect the tanks and leave ?

Is he willing to make any knid of promise at all ?

In what country are the tanks installed ?

RE: chloride content for hydrotest

1000ppm seems high. Is that the only water you have? I'd recommend an inhibitor to help avoid corrosion issues.

What happens after the test?? Is there any chance the chlorides could concentrate up??

Given the time since the OP, what actually happened?!?!
