Mental Blank???

Mental Blank???

Mental Blank???

(OP)
Hi All, I am having a problem trimming an extrusion that sits on an angled plane. I can explain with a simple example.  A simple extrusion like a cylindrical bush and through that bush I have created a plane at a complex angle across it's diameter. On that plane I draw another extrusion say 3mm thick which extends outside the bush. How do I trim it back to the corrrect shape indide the bush so I can have the part made. Maybe a simple answer but have just gone blank. Maybe i am just an old guy with "old timers disease"!!!
Thanks

RE: Mental Blank???

Before creating the second extrusion from the complex angled plane, create a surface with a zero offset from the OD of the cylindrical bush. Then extrude the second extrusion Up to surface. The surface body can then be deleted.

cheers

RE: Mental Blank???

Or ...

Don't trim the bush back to the complex plane, use the second extrusion sketch to cut the material away, the way it would be done in the machine shop, using the Flip side to cut option.

cheers

Thanks for your reply. I am actually trying to cut the 2nd entity in my sample. An example would be. A coke can, a peice of sheet metal drawn on a plane passing right through it. I now want to trim the sheet metal outside the can so I am left with the can complete and the sheet metal at the angle only in the can.  Hope this explanation works. If I can work out how to add a picture or include a file I will do so

Thanks  Steve

RE: Mental Blank???

See FAQs for posting images so we can see.  You may use your Coke can to offset a surface (of zero) to trim with, but I'm likely misunderstanding exactly what you need to do.

RE: Mental Blank???

Are you creating a part or assy?

If an assy you can use the zero offset surface as a trim tool.

If a part, you could extrude-cut the ID from both ends of a solid bush, using the complex plane as the Up to surface and Offset from surface options to create the angled "web".

cheers

RE: Mental Blank???

Instead of creating the sheet metal piece and then trimming it, use the [b]Intersection Curve[/]b tool to create a sketch using the complex plane and the inside surfaces, then extrude the finished shape directly.

cheers

RE: Mental Blank???

Deselect the Merge option before extruding.

Thankyou very much for your invaluable assistance here. That worked just fine. I will now have to get my head into the text and learn some more????

Steve,

I'm giving CBL a star on your behalf.  In the future, click that link below a post that says "Thank _____ for this valuable post!".  This gives the poster a "tipmaster" star, which is basically a vote for "Tipmaster of the week".

WAY TO GO, CBL!
