Rack & pinion-mechanism set up steps

Rack & pinion-mechanism set up steps

(OP)
I have a gear that is rotating and the teeth are pushing a sheet metal plate (the pinion).

I have been trying to set this up using mechanism in Wildfire 3.0 without success, I do not have a manual, etc.  I want to be able to rotate the gear and see the pinion move in a straight direction.  How do I do this? My gear only has 4 teeth, it will rotate about 90 degrees.
thanks for your help

RE: Rack & pinion-mechanism set up steps

There is a very good tutorial here:
http://www.ptc.com/cs/cs_26/howto/apm11683/apm11683.htm

The pinion is the cylindrical rotating item and needs to be assembled with a pin joint, the rack is the straight component and needs to be assembled with a slider.
This rack/pinion gear connection should work fine then
